- Conception and Life Pillars in Ba Zi

by Master Wey, Ba Zi guide

In Ba Zi's practice, the Conception Pillar and Life Pillar are essential components of a person's Destiny Chart, providing insights into different stages of life and key influences. They are often drawn as an extension of the Destiny Chart, having like any pillar a Heavenly Stem, an Earthly Branch, and Hidden Stems.

The Conception Pillar lays the foundation by indicating inherent strengths and weaknesses.

The Life Pillar builds upon this foundation, incorporating external factors and experiences that shape the individual's destiny.

Analyzing both pillars with the Destiny Chart provides a comprehensive understanding of a person's life path, from birth to maturity. Ba Zi Advisor uses these pillars to offer personalized insights, predictions, and guidance. The combination of the Conception and Life Pillars forms the basis for a detailed analysis of an individual's Destiny Chart, unlocking the mysteries of their life journey and potential.

As accustomed in our articles, we will use the Destiny Chart of an unknown John Doe for illustrative purposes, assuming he was born on February 22, 1993, at 09:09.

Now, let's delve into each.

Conception Pillar

The Conception Pillar, also known as the "Ming Gong Pillar" or "Pre-Heaven Pillar," represents the energy at the time of a person's conception. It is derived from the lunar calendar and reflects the innate qualities and potential a person brings into this world.

Computation

Starting from the Month Pillar of the Destiny Chart and following the cycle of the Ten Polar elements (Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water, Yin Water), one is added to the Hidden Stem and following the cycle of Twelve Animals () three is added to the Earthly Branch. For details regarding these cycles read the article Demystifying the Ancient Art of Ba Zi.

For example, in John Doe's Destiny Chart above, the polar element of the Month Heavenly Stem is Yang Wood. When we add one, we get the subsequent polar element, which is Yin Wood. The Earthly Branch animal is Tiger, and by adding three, we arrive at the Snake. We've got the John's Conception Pillar.

Significance

This pillar holds information about the individual's inherent characteristics, talents, and tendencies. It serves as a foundational aspect of the Destiny Chart, setting the stage for the individual's life journey.

Conception serves as the groundwork for the 4 pillars of the Destiny Chart. Therefore, it's unfavorable for any of these pillars to clash with the Conception Pillar. When any of the four pillars clash with the Conception Pillar, individuals represented by that specific pillar may bring negative influences to the person.

We talked about who these people are in the article Ba Zi - Destiny Chart and Luck Pillars but for convenience, we remind them in the table bellow.

It becomes challenging for the individual when the Conception Pillar clashes with the Day Pillar, leading to a life filled with struggles and hardships. Conversely, auspicious auxiliary stars like Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, or Noble People in the Conception Pillar bring great fortune and protection, ensuring a lifetime of prosperity for the person. Don't you know what the Auxiliary stars are? The answer is in the articles What are the Auxiliary Stars in Ba Zi? and 27 Ba Zi Auxiliary Stars Revealed.

When the Conception Pillar's Stem and Branch elements are in a Harmonical Combination with the Year and Hour Pillars, ancestral blessings for longevity are bestowed upon the person. However, if it clashes with the Year Pillar, it may indicate shorter lifespans for the person's parents. Similarly, if there's a clash with the Hour Pillar, there might be a risk of a shorter lifespan for the individual.

If you don't know what Harmonical Combinations are, read the article Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches Interactions in Ba Zi.

Life Pillar

The Life Pillar also referred to as the "Natal Pillar" or "Post-Heaven Pillar," is calculated based on the solar calendar and corresponds to the time of birth. It represents the energy that influences the person throughout their lifetime.

Computation

The Life Pillar is calculated with a bit more complexity as both the Month and Hour Pillars must be taken into account. Individuals who are not aware of their time of birth cannot determine the Life Pillar, and for them, the information within it will remain a mystery.

Significance

The Life Pillar provides insights into the unfolding destiny of an individual. It encompasses the experiences, challenges, and opportunities that shape one's life. Analyzing the elements and interactions in the Life Pillar helps reveal aspects such as career, relationships, and health.

Exercise caution if the Year Pillar and Life Pillar's Branches clash, as this may indicate a higher susceptibility to accidents. Additionally, the presence of the Sky Horse in the Life Pillar might suggest ventures overseas. On the positive side, the presence of the wealth star (DW or IW) in the Life Pillar's Branch can lead to rapid prosperity and significant career achievements. Moreover, if the Seven Killing star resides in the Life Pillar's branch, there is a likelihood of becoming a diplomat or government official assigned to overseas duties.

If the Life Pillar experiences a clash or a combination with a Luck or Yearly Pillar, there's a likelihood of the person being involved in moving or building a new house during that specific 10-year or 1-year period. The impact is more significant if the Life Pillar precisely aligns with the Luck/Yearly Pillar, or if the Stems clash and Branches clash or stems combine with stems and branches combine with branches. Furthermore, if the Life Pillar clashes entirely with any of the Destiny Chart's   Pillars (both Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch clashes), or if the Life Pillar exactly matches any of the Destiny Chart's Pillars, there is a possibility of facing challenges or significant changes during that period, possibly even indicating a very challenging year.
