Ba Zi, also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a centuries-old Chinese metaphysical system employed for fortune-telling and personal analysis. The term "Ba Zi" translates to "eight characters" or "eight words" in English. It pertains to the eight characters constituting an individual's birth chart, known as the Destiny Chart. This chart is calculated based on the individual's date and time of birth.
What are the Four Pillars in Ba Zi and how are they calculated?
The eight characters are typically arranged in four pairs, which are referred to as the Four Pillars. These pillars are computed from the Year, Month, Day, and Hour of birth, employing the Principle of Cyclicity of 60 described below. The positioning of celestial bodies doesn't influence our destiny; instead, it's the prevailing Qi at the moment of birth, resulting from the interplay of three distinct types of Qi: Heavenly, Earthly, and Human.
Each pair consists of a Heavenly Stem, an Earthly Branch, and Hidden Stems, which solely represent the Qi energies of the Earthly Branch. These three elements are traditionally depicted as a Pillar, hence the name "The Four Pillars of Destiny" for the Destiny Chart.
This Destiny Chart can be computed for an individual, a company, or even a nation, provided that the birth date is known. The date comprises four components: the year, the month, the day, and the hour, computed using the Chinese solar-lunar calendar. Each of these components contributes equally, accounting for 25% of the prevailing Qi. Furthermore, they exhibit a cyclical pattern with a 60-year period, as explained below. The algorithm for these calculations is thoroughly documented in numerous sources, and in contemporary times, it is a task best suited for computers. While the Hour of birth holds significance in the Destiny Chart, it is not indispensable. If this information is unavailable, we will calculate only the three main pillars: Day, Month, and Year. In such cases, we can still provide you with information with an accuracy of 75%.

What do the four pillars represent in Ba Zi?
In the framework of the Four Pillars of Destiny, each pillar serves as a window into different facets of an individual's life. The Year Pillar, linked to the year of birth, provides insights into the person's affinity with their relatives, and it can also shed light on their connection to the economic and geopolitical circumstances that may influence their life journey.
Moving to the Month Pillar, which corresponds to the month of birth, this pillar uncovers the external aspect and behavioral tendencies of an individual. It also reveals valuable information about their relationship with their parents, offering a glimpse into the dynamics of this essential familial bond.
The Day Pillar delves into the inner self of the person, laying bare their core characteristics and attributes. This pillar goes further to explore the person's affinity with their spouse or potential life partner, giving an understanding of the dynamics in their most intimate relationships.
Lastly, the Hour Pillar, associated with the hour of birth, serves as a gateway to the person's deepest aspirations and desires. It also provides insights into the individual's affinity with their children, shedding light on the unique dynamics within the parent-child relationship.
Together, these four pillars create a comprehensive portrait of an individual's life, encompassing their connections with family, external behavior, inner self, and their most cherished aspirations and relationships.

Cycles In Universe
A cycle is a sequence of events that repeat themselves periodically. We can see these examples of cycles everywhere around us. There are cycles in physics, biology, astronomy, geology, weather, economics, history, psychology, etc. The cycles related to the movement of the Sun and planets were observed from ancient times and this observation led us to the first calendars, including the Chinese Traditional Calendar described below. Once we can identify the period of the cycle, we can predict the occurrence of an event as long as we know our position in the cycle.
Based on Tycho Brahe's accurate and comprehensive astronomical and planetary observations, Johannes Kepler has developed his three laws of the motion of the planets.
Over centuries, Chinese astronomers and scientists observed, recorded, and tried to comprehend the natural world. They passed the knowledge from generation to generation and finally, they used the patterns that they found to develop an elaborate metaphysical system that includes Ba Zi, Feng Shui, Ze Ri, etc. The lifetime and the condition of a person were thought to be connected to cycles: 12 animals cycle, 10 polar elements cycle, and the cycle of 60.
12 animals cycle
The 12 animals cycle, started to be used in China around the year 100 A.D. for recording the years. 12 was a meaningful number in the past when people observed it to be 12 fool moons in a year and 12 equal parts in a day. They grouped the years in periods of 12, attributing the same patterns to the animal signs.
The legend says that before Buddha's passing and entry into Nirvana, he called an assembly of all the world’s animals to determine how to restore order to the world, but only 12 animals came.
The first animal who arrived was the rat, followed in order by ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The first year received the rat's name and so on till the pig.
The animal signs are used purely as a memory clue and carry no personal meaning. Be aware, that animal signs cannot reveal the attributes of a person!
10 polar elements cycle
The myth says that the 10 polar elements cycle appeared during the reign of the Yellow Emperor (2698–2598 BC), who asked his brighter minds from the court for a system to record the time during one year.
The proposed system is based on the 5 elements generating cycle - wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
Each element is first in a growing phase - yang, followed by a destruction phase - Yin. The 10 results from polar elements are in order: yang wood, yin wood, yang fire, yin fire, yang earth, yin earth, yang metal, yin metal, yang water, and yin water.
Principle of Cyclicity of 60
According to the legend, the Cycle of 60 has been used since the 27th century BC, to reveal the divine side of the nature of events.
This cycle is based on the previously described 12 animals and 10 polar elements cycles, which combine themselves like a system of two connected gear wheels, one with 12 and the other with 10 teeth. Two teeth are initially in contact, and after 5 complete rotations of the first wheel and 6 complete rotations of the second wheel will reach again the initial position. This defines the period of 60 of this cycle.
Another approach is to consider that each of the 5 elements can correspond to each of the 12 animals which means a total of 12 x 5 = 60.
Chinese solar-lunar calendar
In Chinese metaphysics, each time we talk about the Chinese calendar we will understand the Chinese Traditional Calendar, which is no longer in use officially nowadays. Since 1911, China began to use the Gregorian calendar, the same as that used in Western countries.
The legendary emperor Huang Di ('Yellow Emperor') began his rule in 2697 (2698 BC) and he was portrayed as the mastermind of the Chinese centralized state and the initiator of Chinese civilization. Under his reign, the people started using wooden houses, boats, bows with arrows, writing, Chinese astronomy, and the Chinese calendar.
How accurate is Ba Zi in predicting events or personality traits?
Ba Zi is the most intricate and accurate method to understand a person's personality, qualities, and flaws, delving into the deepest details. It provides insights into careers, relationships, love, and more.
Successfully used for activity planning, Ba Zi forecasts offer higher success chances when the day's auspices align favorably with the activities.
Unlike other systems, which rely on birth year or month, Ba Zi considers year, month, day, and hour equally, each corresponding to a unique animal-element pair from the 60-year cycle. With 12,960,000 possibilities, the likelihood of encountering two people with the same Destiny Chart is 1 in 12,960,000.
