- About Personal Feng Shui

by Master Wey, Ba Zi guide

In today's article, we will introduce some basic elements of Personal Feng Shui and explain their functionality.

When discussing Feng Shui, we can refer to two types of Feng Shui:

Feng Shui of a Space

  • Focuses on harmonizing energies;
  • Achieved by applying specific remedies, following an analysis of the sectors and external forms.

Personal Feng Shui

  • Involves harmonizing ourselves with the surrounding energies and, depending on our desires, accessing Heavenly Support;
  • Achieved by activating Personal Favorable Directions and Temporary Directions according to our needs.

Note! Do not confuse directions with sectors.

The Difference Between Directions and Sectors

Direction in Feng Shui refers to our orientation in relation to the eight cardinal points (North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, and Southwest). Each direction has specific energetic associations that influence us depending on what is activated.

How do we activate a direction? Activation happens when we spend enough time with our head facing a cardinal point (while lying down) or facing it (while sitting or standing).

Sector in Feng Shui refers to a zone or subdivision of a space, determined by the cardinal points when a building, room, or other area is divided using the Bagua or Luo Pan (Feng Shui compass). Each sector corresponds to a direction, with unique energies and influences affecting various aspects of life, such as health, career, relationships, or prosperity.

Personal Directions

These are divided into four favorable directions and four unfavorable directions unique to each individual, based on Traditional Feng Shui principles. These directions are calculated using the Kua number and are associated with specific cardinal points (e.g., N, W, NW, etc.), but they differ from person to person.

There are two types of people based on Personal Directions: Eastern and Western types. For Eastern types, the favorable directions are N, S, E, and SE, while for Western types, the favorable directions are NW, W, SW, and NE. People who share the same Kua group tend to bring positive energy to each other, while those from opposing groups might encounter some difficulties. Within the same group, individuals are considered compatible, and their compatibility is ranked in four levels, from F1 to F4. Conversely, individuals from different groups are deemed incompatible, with their level of incompatibility also rated from U1 to U4. For more information on this, refer to the compatibility table below, and be sure to check out our article, Quickstart Feng Shui: Decoding Compatibility Through Kua Numbers for an in-depth look.

Kua Number

The Kua number, also known as Gua or Ming Gua number, is an essential element in Feng Shui practice because it helps identify favorable directions and elements for each individual. It is calculated based on the year of birth—but be careful! In Feng Shui, we use the Chinese solar year, which typically starts between February 3 and February 5. For example, someone born on January 27, 1993, will consider 1992 as their birth year.

Let’s explore these directions and their effects together!

The “Support Star” Direction

The Support Star (Fu Wei) is one of the four favorable directions.

  • Excellent for learning, studying, and preparing for exams, making it ideal for library visits.
  • Its energy brings peace, mental clarity, and psychological health.
  • Sleeping with your head oriented in this direction can accelerate healing from trauma, and prayers made toward this direction have a direct impact.

The element associated with the Support Star is Wood, which attracts luck, mental health, and detachment.

The “Greedy Wolf” Direction

The Greedy Wolf (Sheng Qi) is the most active and favorable direction, symbolizing prosperity and abundance.

  • Associated with career advancement, financial opportunities, and personal achievements, acting as a true catalyst for success.
  • Its element is Wood, and its Yang energy stimulates the generation of wealth.

Recommendation: Do not position your bed in this direction, as it may affect sleep quality.

The “Heavenly Doctor” Direction

The Heavenly Doctor (Tian Yi) is considered the most favorable direction for health and attracting mentors or divine helpers.

  • Excellent for recovery, healing, and overall well-being.
  • Its element is Earth, which attracts support and protection.

Recommendation: Sleep with your head oriented in this direction for faster healing and improved general health.

The “Military Arts” Direction

The Military Arts (Yan Nian) direction is ideal for improving relationships and communication skills.

  • Promotes family harmony, positive relationships, and effective communication.
  • The associated element is Metal, which is ideal for strengthening personal and professional bonds.

Unfavorable Directions

It is recommended to avoid activating these directions.

  1. Accident Star – Symbolizes obstacles and negative changes. Associated element: Earth.
  2. Chastity Star – Linked to betrayal, gossip, and negative energy. Associated element: Fire.
  3. Literary Arts – May bring legal disputes, accidents, or public disappointments. Associated element: Fire.
  4. Defeated Soldier – The most dangerous direction, associated with disasters and severe illnesses. Associated element: Metal.

Take these directions into account wherever you are, but pay attention to the specific characteristics of your home or office. In special cases where negativity in a sector must be neutralized (when applying spatial Feng Shui), personal directions might not be followed, as the energy of the sector can have a stronger influence.

Temporary Directions

These directions change daily. They are activated when you face them for extended periods while performing activities or resting (for sleep, your head should face the favorable direction).

In some cases, these directions may overlap with your personal unfavorable directions. In such situations, it’s better to wait for a day when the favorable daily directions align with your personal favorable ones. However, if you choose to activate a favorable direction that conflicts with your personal unfavorable directions, you must be prepared to accept possible negative effects as collateral. After all, everything comes at a price.

The 4 Daily Favorable Directions are:

  • Happiness Direction – Brings energy that is beneficial for mood enhancement.
  • Prosperity Direction – Brings energy that is beneficial for material gains.
  • Nobleman of the Night Direction (active between 5:00 PM and 5:00 AM) – Brings energy that is beneficial for meeting helpful people.
  • Nobleman of the Day Direction (active between 5:00 AM and 5:00 PM) – Brings energy that is beneficial for meeting helpful people.
