- What Does the Day Pillar Reveal in Ba Zi? - Part 2

by Master Wey, Ba Zi guide

In the first part, we explained what Ba Zi is and the role of Cycle 60 in Chinese metaphysics.

We have started with the Yang Pillars in the first article, and we'll describe hereunder the Yin Pillars.

Day Pillar: This pillar represents the specific day of birth, and it is associated with one of the ten heavenly stems and one of the twelve earthly branches in the Chinese calendar. The Day Pillar delves into the person's inner self, laying bare their core characteristics and attributes. This pillar further explores the person's affinity with their spouse or potential life partner, understanding the dynamics in their most intimate relationships.

Chinese ideograms

Once you have reached this level with the study of Ba Zi, it is assumed that you have already familiarized yourself with the main Chinese ideograms used in the pillars. They represent the 10 polar elements and the 12 animals. If it is not like that, it would be preferable to do it and I have included their translation in the following tables. In the following, for ease of expression, we will use them in the text.

The 12 animals

zi (rat) chou (ox) yin (tiger) mao (rabbit) chen (dragon) si (snake)
yang water yin earth yang wood yin wood yang earth yin fire
wu (horse) chou (ox) wei (goat) you (rooster) xu (dog) hai (pig)

The Yin Pillars

乙- YI (Yin Wood)

Yin Wood pillars embody sensitivity, finding strength in the peaks of challenges with 甲 (Wood). Their resilience flourishes when accompanied by their "brother" 甲. Born in autumn, they yearn for the warmth of Fire, seeking harmony amidst the seasonal changes.

  • 乙/丑 (辛-7K 己 – IW 癸- IR) – A delicate flower in the snow, not entirely stable, susceptible to illnesses. Requires the warmth of 丙 for stability. Skilled manipulators, masters of planning with strong intuition. Prone to stomach issues and cancer. The Harmony Officer (HO) is 丙
  • 乙/未 – Resembles grass in dry sand (cactus), prone to skin problems. Symbolizes loneliness, patient, and clear goals. Often solitary, enjoys meditation, and is spiritually inclined. Women may face difficulties in childbirth or child mortality.
  • 乙/卯 – Symbolizes self-comfort, emotionally adaptable, whimsical. Drifts with the wind, easily influenced by friends. Strong affinity with fire weakens them. Not recommended for starting personal businesses.
  • 乙/酉 – A blade of grass among fallen soldiers' swords. Women do well partnering with men (stays in the spouse palace). Women with 7K in the Spouse Palace face complications during childbirth. Men may experience genital issues or weight gain around 30.
  • 乙/巳 – Grass atop a hill, creative, sentimental, attractive. Women are often beautiful with large breasts. Generally lucky, likable, and skilled actors.
  • 乙/亥 (壬 – DR 甲 -RW)– Grass growing on a lake, spiritually inclined, especially on specific spiritual days. Affected if someone takes their partner (on Resource Palace). They thrive with 戊, exhibiting spiritual tendencies. Have doubts if there's excess water in the Heavenly Stems. The mother is crucial for men.

丁 – DING (Yin Fire)

Yin Fire pillars are soft at heart and easily connect with Yin Wood. They enjoy spreading light, aligning well with Yang Water. They rely on Yang Wood (resources) to survive in winter and fall. If a boy, he's a mama's boy, and for both, family comes first.

  • 丁/丑 – Resembles a candle in the snow, fond of eating. Short-lived, problematic in relationships, often drawn to things that repel others. Experiences muscle contractions and eye issues. Attracts and repels simultaneously.
  • 丁/未 – Faces challenges in love and friendships, with secondary energy entering the cemetery. Attracts 壬/午 and 午, repels 癸/丑 and 辛/丑. Conflict-prone, indecisive, the only chubby 丁. Born during the day has more success in relationships. Birth between 卯 and 酉 leads to infidelity
  • 丁/卯 – Symbolizes a large candle, attractive and romantic. Enjoys taking care of others, dislikes business. May undergo sudden operations when encountering 酉. Eccentric, unpredictable, superstitious, loses superstitions if 庚 appears in Destiny Chart.
  • 丁/酉 – Depicts a starry night, sexy with great sex appeal. 酉 symbolizes the sunset, lacks refinement. Women face gynecological issues, and men tend to cheat. Resides on IW (辛), high libido, easily bored in sex without novelty. Those with 酉 enjoy sex, while those with 子 think about it but rarely engage.
  • 丁/巳 – Always feels second, struggles to reach the top, divides life on the edge, starts but doesn't finish. Requires multiple jobs, even three if born in the morning. Prone to betrayal in business. Seeks revenge even if seemingly gentle. In relationships, men seek pale women, and women prefer darker-skinned men.
  • 丁/亥 (壬 – DO) – Resembles a floating river candle. Women excel in relationships, a strong pillar connecting heaven and earth. Capable of turning challenges into advantages. 壬 (DO) makes them self-sufficient. Partners must be sexy, reputation matters, enjoys metal forging.

己 – JI (Yin Earth)

Yin Earth pillars thrive in moisture, disliking dryness. They embrace fertility, and nurturing Wood elements.

  • 己/丑 – Resembles white sand, pale skin that doesn't tan easily. Supportive and altruistic, struggles in relationships but maintains a cheerful demeanor. Prone to illness when encountering 壬.
  • 己/未 – Depicts a desert, often feeling inadequate except for those with 亥 in HN. Can be ruthless, infertile without water in HN, oblivious if no water at all.
  • 己/卯 – Illustrates earth with pieces of wood (sawdust over earth) – a dangerous pillar (7K). Manipulative, not recommended in business. Becomes frustrated and vengeful when exposed to fire but prospers when rising to the surface.
  • 己/酉 – Represents gold, highly talented, a versatile pillar. Dives into various tasks but falters if 辛 is exposed – then, not good at anything. Ultra-protective mothers, initially shy in sex but become lively and enjoy being dominated.
  • 己/巳 (丙 – IR) – Spiritual leaders, influential inspirers, intuitive. Prone to schizophrenia if 丙 is exposed.
  • 己/亥 – Ideal for long-term relationships, except for those born at night (they might deceive). Should be employed, take care of their skin. Women need long hair to prevent cancer; a cancer-prone pillar. 甲 is crucial to prevent cancer.

辛 – XIN (Yin Metal)

Yin Metal pillars need 壬 and dislike earth. Perfect as is, they seek 丁 when cold and 壬 when hot.

  • 辛/卯 – Depicted as a precious antique necklace, they manage finances well. Men may face impotence, and women sterility. Likely to undergo at least one surgery in their lifetime and are prone to betrayal in business.
  • 辛/酉(辛- F) – Represented by scissors, not suitable for relationships, despite having a long life and stability. Not wealthy, not ideal for business, prideful, slow to get drunk, and tend to develop dependencies.
  • 辛/巳 (丙) – Symbolized as a star of the journey. Women experience long but dull relationships, displaying elegance and sentimentality. They are stable and adept at using their abilities to achieve their goals, sometimes ruthlessly.
  • 辛/亥 (壬 – HO) – Depicted as travelers. Women lack luck in love, while men are loud and talkative. They require 戊 (DR) - mother. If the relationship with their mother is not cultivated, they become excessively noisy. Men have poor relationships but better than women, which are disastrous. They tend to have kinky and perverse tendencies.
  • 辛/丑 (己 – IR) – Portrayed as the most paranormal of 辛, with good health and hidden resources in 丑. Not necessarily long-lived. If they have water in HN, especially 癸, they become sentimental and show affection towards children (younger than their actual age).
  • 辛/未 (己 – IR) – Described as lonely, successful, manipulative individuals who easily experience stress. Skilled in seduction, perpetually dissatisfied, and their lesson in life is gratitude. They sit on a resource.

癸 – GUI (Yin Water)

Yin Water pillars represent the most Yin stem, farthest from Yang. They think naturally, and looking at 癸, they see a rat. They appreciate sexual activities.

  • 癸/卯 (乙 – EG) – Represented as the star of passion, they are highly sensual and creative, especially in intimate relationships. Women may become absorbed in motherhood, ignoring their partners. Kinkiness is acceptable in their daily lives.
  • 癸/酉 (辛 – IR) – Inclined towards mysticism, they value education and enjoy reading. Deep thinkers, they can be quality friends, especially when 丙 is exposed. They remain lively dancers even in their later years.
  • 癸/巳 (庚- DR 丙 – DW戊 - DO) – With both the sun and moon, men tend to have better relationships than women. Positioned on three favorable stars, they have the ability to make money. Working in large groups and international exposure suits them well.
  • 癸/亥 (壬 – RW 甲 – HO) – Depicted as an ocean with clouds above, they possess mysterious qualities. Creative and innovative, they always bring something new. The most impatient pillar, they symbolize the end – the last pillar.
  • 癸/丑 – Described as wet and frozen earth, they have a poor memory and can be compared to a tougher iceberg. Instinctually astute, they have many friends but need to be cautious about water, as there's a high risk of cancer.
  • 癸/未 – Portrayed as a mirage, they have a better memory than those before them. Their true nature is never what it seems. Considered a spiritual day, they may seem childlike in old age, attracting many people and especially drawing in 戊/午 (丁 - DR).
