In this article, we will talk again about the 5 elements, the relationships between them, and the Day Master. For a good understanding, we recommend you read first The Theory of the 5 Elements and Ba Zi Decoding - Day Master Analysis.
When we speak about elements in relation to the Day Master, for convenience we refer to them as Stars. Based on the existent interactions between each of the 5 elements and the Day Master, the Ba Zi study defines Five Stars as follows:
- Friends Star (FS) is the same element as the Day Master element
- Resource Star (RS) is the element that generates the Day Master element
- Output Star (OS) is the element generated by the Day Master element
- Wealth Star (WS) is the element controlled by the Day Master element
- Influence Star (IS) is the element that controls the Day Master element
Wise men said that the quality of the elements (Stars) in a Destiny Chart is much more important than their number. This is true and we should never forget this, but still, we can formulate some conclusions after analyzing the number of elements (Stars) existent in a Destiny Chart. Before going further with our analysis let's see how to correctly count the number of elements.
Taking the Destiny Chart above as an example, the Day Master is Water. The Friend Star is Water as well, the Resource Star is Metal, the Output Star is Wood, the Wealth Star is Fire and the Influence Star is Earth.
How do you count the elements?
Without taking care of the polarity of each element (Yin or Yang), we count all the Heavenly Stems elements and the Hidden Stems elements as well. That's all!
Note: We don't count the Earthly Branches because their Hidden Stems already counted their Qi.
To clarify these we look again at the Destiny Chart we have used as an example above and we count:
OS - 4 (wood), WS - 1 (fire), IS - 3 (earth), RS - 3 (metal), and FS - 4 (water).
A Star is considered Revealed when it appears in the Heavenly Stems, and its principles will be visible in the person's character, but if a Star can only be found in the Hidden Stems and not as Main Qi, its principles will need effort or external actions to be brought to the surface to be visible or to be used. At the same time, we can consider that the Stars found in Heavenly Stems are the first impression about somebody, and the Stars in Hidden Stems represent the True Impression (they represent more the inner self of the person).
A star in Excess in a Chart tends to manifest its negative traits, especially when the Star is Strong and supported by the Season of the chart.
If a Star is Missing from a chart it will be very difficult for the person to reach the principles or traits represented by this Star. We say there is no affinity between the person and the Star. For example, if the Wealth Star is missing from a chart we can consider that it is very unlikely for that person to become rich in this life.

Let's see now what could we say about a Ba Zi Destiny Chart analyzing only the presence or absence of each of the Five Stars and their strength. Generally speaking, the influence of a Weak Element over the Destiny Chart and Day Master is rather neglectable, the person will not manifest specific traits of this element and will not have strong affinities with all that is represented by this element. Contrary, a Strong element will have a serious impact on the Day Master and the Destiny Chart.
Friends Star
The Friends Star is the same element as the Day Master. From this perspective, it defines who we are but it could also signify:
- leisure and holidays
- parties
- competition and competitors
Resource Star
For a person, the Resource Star is related to physical and mental health, with wellbeing and comfort. It also represents the level of education, genetic heritage, and sense of self-esteem, the level of appreciation of life. The Resource Star is the element that generates the Day Master. That's why it represents:
- health, positive emotions, self-control
- personal or company documents
- mother for both men and women
- entire accumulated knowledge
Output Star
The Output Star is the element produced by the Day Master element and it represents the goals, dreams, and aspirations in life, the creativity, work, and achievements of a person.
For most people, the Output Star signifies the means of livelihood and the source of wealth.
Various Day Masters have different Ouput Stars elements which means:
- OS = Wood: represents literature and education fields, writing and drawing, agriculture, medicine, civil engineering, design
- OS = Fire: means creative expression, successful performers, love being in the spotlight, metaphysics, IT, oil, and electricity-related
- OS = Earth: real estate business, art, jewelry, insurance companies, mining
- OS = Metal: justice, army, legal activities, banking, machines-related jobs, usury
- OS = Water: business requesting mobility, logistics, traveling, adventure, software, cleaning, planning, supermarkets, bars
Output Star could also represent:
- children for women
- extravagance
- hypnosis
Wealth Star
Because it is the element controlled by the Day Master, we can say that Wealth Star represents:
- our affinity for money (strong if the Day Master is Strong)
- wife or/and mistress for men
- the father for both men and women
- assets and properties
- affinity for risks
Influence Star
Talking about Influence Star we are talking about charisma, leadership, control and power, self-control, and discipline of a person. This star is important for people to get a respected position in society.
Being the element that controls the Day Master, the Influence Star could represent:
- authority, legal and political power
- sense of justice
- leading skills
- discipline
- protection
- the workplace, the job
- the husband or lover for women
- the children for men
