- Fui Gong, Fu Yin, and Fan Yin: Key Concepts for Ba Zi Mastery

by Master Wey, Ba Zi guide

Fu Yin, Fan Yin, and Fui Gong are important concepts in Ba Zi (Four Pillars of Destiny) that reflect specific interactions between the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches of a person’s Destiny Chart, based on their birth date, or between their Destiny Chart and external events such as yearly or monthly changes.

To evaluate the effects of Fu Yin, Fan Yin, and Fui Gong in your Destiny Chart, you must remember that in addition to their broader representations, the pillars in your Ba Zi chart can also represent specific relationships in your life:

  • Hour Pillar: Represents your desires and aspirations but can also signify your children.
  • Day Pillar: Represents yourself but can also signify your spouse or significant other.
  • Month Pillar: Represents your career path but can also signify your parents.
  • Year Pillar: Represents your environment and network but can also signify your relatives, bosses, teachers, or mentors.

What is Fu Yin?

Fu Yin occurs when one of the pillars in a current year, month, day, or hour matches exactly with one of the four pillars in your personal Ba Zi chart (year, month, day, or hour), or when you have two identical pillars in your Destiny Chart. This means the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the current time period are identical to one of your birth pillars. Generally, Fu Yin indicates stagnation and serves as a time for reflection. It can also signify disappointment, unhappiness, or a cycle of bad news. To gain more insights into the nature of these disappointments, it is necessary to analyze which Gods are involved in Fui Gong.

Effects of Fu Yin in Your Destiny Chart:

  • Year Pillar Fu Yin: Occurs every 60 years and represents a period for self-reflection and withdrawal from hectic life. At age 60, this often signifies a shift from materialistic pursuits to a more spiritual focus, allowing you time to contemplate your future path. It can also indicate changes in your social circle, relationships with relatives, or shifts in your interactions with bosses or mentors.
  • Month Pillar Fu Yin: Focuses on your career and life path. This period prompts you to step back and evaluate your direction in your professional life. It may also indicate a time to re-evaluate your relationship with your parents or authority figures.
  • Day Pillar Fu Yin: Relates to your personal relationships, including your spouse or significant other. It’s a time to reflect on partnerships, whether romantic, familial, or friendships.
  • Hour Pillar Fu Yin: Encourages self-reflection and introspection regarding your deepest dreams, aspirations, and goals but may also highlight important aspects concerning your children and their well-being.
  • Luck Pillar (10-Year) Fu Yin: This represents a decade of contemplation and life evaluation, potentially leading to significant changes in your life direction.

Overall, Fu Yin serves as a cosmic pause, urging you to reflect, think, and realign your life. It can feel as if the Universe is intentionally slowing you down, giving you time for deep personal growth.

What is Fan Yin?

Fan Yin occurs when the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of a current year, month, day, or hour clash with one of the pillars in your Ba Zi chart. Fan Yin is more powerful than a usual Clash because both the Earthly Branches and the Heavenly Stems collide. These clashing elements often bring a sense of disruption or transformation, signaling that something new is coming into your life, or that you are instigating changes yourself. It is crucial to consider the relationship between the elements involved. For instance, if one element is water, which controls fire, the weaker pillar (in this case, fire) will be affected more significantly. Although clashes can bring physical challenges or emotional turmoil, they often open doors to new opportunities and growth.

Effects of Fan Yin in Your Destiny Chart:

  • Year Pillar Fan Yin: Affects your social network, customers, or living environment. Affects your social network, customers, or living environment. New influences may disrupt your established social or home life while also facilitating growth and change. It can also indicate disruptions in relationships with relatives or mentors.
  • Month Pillar Fan Yin: Influences your career. This may lead to job changes, relocations, or new career directions. It can also signal changes in your relationship with your parents or authority figures. Particularly, when Fan Yin occurs in the 6th Life Cycle Pillar, it’s crucial to be mindful of health and well-being, as the Universe prepares you for the next phase of life.
  • Day Pillar Fan Yin: Affects your relationships, including with your spouse or significant other. This could signify a change in partnerships or the possibility of a new relationship if the old one no longer serves you.
  • Hour Pillar Fan Yin: Impacts your ideas, dreams, and aspirations, as well as matters related to your children. New thoughts or opportunities may emerge, leading you in unexpected directions.

The existence of a Fan Yin between the Day and Month Pillars in a Destiny Chart can represent a nearly permanent conflict between the individual and their parents. Similarly, a Fan Yin between the Hour and Year Pillars may indicate a conflict between one’s desires and aspirations and the society or environment in which one lives. In both cases, studying the strength of the involved elements and their relationships is crucial.

Between the elements of the two Pillars in Fan Yin, there is a controlling relationship, see the image below. Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, and Metal completes the cycle by controlling Wood. If the controlling element is stronger, the controlled Pillar tends to be overpowered, along with everything it represents. On the other hand, if the controlling element is weaker, this will manifest as a continuous frustration in the area represented by that Pillar. The conflict, whether intense or mild, will often be felt when the two elements are equally strong, as their power fluctuates over time.

The controlling relationship is represented by the red arrows.

Fan Yin can bring external or internal conflict, but it also presents a chance for growth. It's a time to embrace change and be flexible, as clashing energies push you out of your comfort zone, encouraging adaptation and evolution.

Summary of Fu Yin vs. Fan Yin in Horoscope (Current Pillars):

  • Fu Yin in Horoscope (between current pillars and your Destiny Chart) indicates a period of self-reflection and stillness. You are encouraged to slow down and evaluate your life in whatever area the pillar influences (social life, career, relationships, or self).
  • Fan Yin in Horoscope (between current pillars and your Destiny Chart) brings disruption, challenges, and change. Whether in your personal, professional, or social life, depending on which Pillar from the Destiny Chart is involved, you may need to adjust to new situations or let go of the old.

Both Fu Yin and Fan Yin are significant events in Ba Zi, offering unique opportunities for introspection and transformation, depending on how you embrace the energies they bring.

What Does Fui Gong Mean?

In Ba Zi, there are four Pillars out of the possible sixty known as Fui Gong, which are considered the Commander Leaders. Individuals with the Day Pillar as Fui Gong are characterized by strong determination and resilience, thriving in a life generally filled with challenges. They are steadfast and incredibly difficult to defeat. While they possess a strong-minded nature, they also exhibit nobility, though they often display aggression in pursuit of their goals. Typically, they have high expectations and can be hard to please.

The presence of another pillar, aside from the Day Pillar, as Fui Gong in a Destiny Chart, does not mean that the individual lacks the attributes described above; rather, they cannot be characterized solely by these traits. Additionally, having more than one Fui Gong in a Destiny Chart is not always desirable, as these pillars may conflict with one another, leading to inner turmoil.

Below, we outline the pillars considered Fui Gong and their specific characteristics:

  • Yang Metal - Dragon: This is the most powerful Fui Gong (literally "Art"). Individuals with this pillar are mentally resilient, highly action-oriented, strong, and open-minded, yet very calculated and strategic in their approach. They are tenacious, often experiencing troubled relationships. Regarded as Commander Leaders, they are skilled fighters but risk encountering many minor accidents. This is the only pillar that emits Noble Qi.
  • Yang Metal - Dog: This is another Fui Gong (literally "Art"). People with this pillar are mentally and physically strong, with a sense of ego balanced by honor. They are intuitive and spiritual but often prone to solitude. They are tough, and people may fear them; typically, they do not have successful marriages. They possess leadership qualities and can effectively lead the masses. If they are too gentle, they risk a shorter life; action is essential rather than aggression. Practicing martial arts is necessary, and attracting Rabbit people can be beneficial for financial success.
  • Yang Earth - Dog: This pillar ranks second in strength to Fui Gong (military art). Individuals are steady, strong-willed, passionate, and resolute. They may face hardships in life and often struggle with love and relationships. However, by utilizing their inner resources, they can accumulate wealth. They can be ruthless, sharp, vengeful, and appear hard, despite seeming gentle. Their thinking can be dangerously complex, leading to both deception and being deceived. Generally shy, they tend not to express themselves and often feel that they are in the wrong.
  • Yang Water - Dragon: This is the easiest Fui Gong (military art). These individuals are self-reliant, natural leaders, outspoken, and driven by competition. They possess nobility and a strong life force, allowing them to endure many hardships. Their sociability is a gift, and they are considered Commander Leaders. They are determined to achieve their goals and love to win, becoming frustrated with losses. Independent and capable, they often face challenges in relationships alone. Resilient and difficult to bring down, they lead challenging lives, yet their powerful life force is strong enough to repel spirits—because even ghosts fear them. They are often perfectionists, possessing talents or challenges that may not be immediately visible but significantly impact their lives from behind the scenes. The combination of Yang Water and Yang Earth represents a pure mountain spring, enhancing their overall strength and earning them the appreciation they deserve from those who come to know them. They set very high expectations that can be challenging for others to meet.
